Pekka Sauri became known to the Finnish public through a radio show called Nightline, produced by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). He started to host the show on Radio City during 1987–1997 after Teppo Turkki, who had created the original format. YLE took over the show, and Mr. Sauri hosted it during 1997-2002. On Nightline Mr. Sauri answered live phone calls trying to help troubled people solve their problems.
Mr. Sauri has been active in Helsinki municipal policy since mid 1980’s. He was the Party Secretary of the Green League of Finland in 1990-1991 and Chairman in 1991-1993. After his term as Helsinki City Counsellor (1993-2003) he was elected Deputy Mayor for Public Works and Environmental Affairs in 2003. He is the very first green politician in Finland to hold that position.
The responsibilities of the Deputy Mayor for Public Works and Environmental Affairs involve the sustainability, functionality, maintenance and safety of the urban environment. Public transport is also the responsibility of Mr. Sauri’s sector. Additionally, the Public Transport Committee, the Public Utilities Committee, the Rescue Committee, the Public Works Committee and the Environment Committee operate in the scope of Mr. Sauri’s branch.
Pekka Sauri has published his Ph.D thesis - the Production of Psychological Knowledge as Communicative Interaction – at Brunel University, London, U.K. He has written several books and appeared as a cartoonist in several dailies and periodicals.
